Using Time Lapses in Death of a Salesman Arthur Miller wrote â€Å"Death of a Salesman† in 1949. For this essay I am planning to explore the structural devices used in the play. Particularly time lapses. The play is set in Willy’s house and the various places he visits in New York. â€Å"Death of a Salesman† has been described as a modern tragedy and it certainly follows the rules. Willy Loman, the protagonist, is the tragic hero with a fatal flaw; his defect is his supreme pretence and pride. He lives in two different worlds. In the real world he has fallen from grace, another rule vital to tragedies, but in the imaginary world in Willy’s head. The place that clings onto every happy memory just won’t let him drop. Linda recognises this and tries to be delicate and tactful as if this will stop Willy from falling off the edge. I think that she just wants to protect him. The fantasy in this scene is Ben finally leaving for his new life, as for the whole play Ben has been trying to leave Willy but now it’s his time to go, as it is Willy’s. Willy’s brother Ben clearly represents freedom and Willy’s past. It represents the chance Willy always wanted and needed, but he didn’t take. He is very repentant of this, and like most moments his mind won’t let him forget this one. Willy conjures up these fantasy worlds to escape from reality but also to reassure himself that he is doing the right thing. But his conscience comes in from time to time, to try and bring him back down to earth and usually comes in the voice of Ben. The recollections in the play usually pivot around certain objects or phrases. These objects or phrases are skilful uses of symbolism. The symbols that Arthur Miller uses are often keys that unlock Willy’s memory and almost always are milestones on the road to his instability. One particular use of symbolism is Linda’s stockings. These evoke anger in him, which is not necessarily at himself but clearly unsettles him. It reminds him of the practically worthless affair and Linda’s faithful and undying love for Willy. There are many characteristics that must be taken into account to permit a nuclear power plant to operate properly. The way Nora handles her situation is inspirational. She had been treated like a doll by both her father and her husband, but she has the strength to stand up to her husband. She decides to leave and start a new life for herself. The human spirit will not be trampled on. Nora has done something that is not wrong, and she has done it for a very good reason. She begins to question everything she has always blindly accepted, including being a wife and mother, and her religious training. Even though Nora was held down her whole life, she realizes that she has â€Å"duties to myself.† She knows that most people would think that what she was doing was wrong, but she stays true to herself. In the end, Nora does what she has to do to survive. â€Å"A Doll’s House† starts as a play about a typical middle class family. Nora goes through challenges and realizes that they cannot do what society expects out of her. She goes outside the boundaries of what she is allowed to do as a woman for a reason that she feels is noble. But she is punished  for that action and cannot accept the fact that she is reprimanded for it. In the end, when Nora decides to leave her husband and family, her decision opens up a possibility of a new life and personal growth for her. Charles Cotesworth Pinckney Was Born On February 25th, 1746 At Charles

Charles Cotesworth Pinckney was born on February 25th, 1746 at Charleston, the eldest son of a politically prominent planter and a remarkable mother who introduced and promoted indigo culture in South Carolina. 7 years later, he accompanied his father, who had been appointed colonial agent for South Carolina, to England. As a result, the young Charles enjoyed a European education. Pinckney received tutoring in London, attended several preparatory schools, and went on to Christ Church College, Oxford, where he heard the lectures of the legal authority Sir William Blackstone and graduated in 1764. Pinckney next pursued legal training at London's. Middle Temple and was accepted for admission into the English bar in 1769. He then spent part of a year touring Europe and studying chemistry, military science, and botany under leading authorities. Late in 1769, Pinckney sailed home and the next year entered practice in South Carolina. His political career began in 1769, when he was elected to the provincial assembly. When South Carolina organized its forces in 1775 to battle the British, Pinckney joined the First South Carolina Regiment as a captain. He soon rose to the rank of colonel and fought in the South in defence of Charleston and in the North at the Battles of Brandywine, PA, and Germantown, PA. When Charleston fell in 1780, he was taken prisoner and held until 1782. The following year, he was discharged as a brevet brigadier general. Pinckney was one of the leaders at the Constitutional Convention. Present at all the sessions, he strongly advocated a powerful national government. His proposal that senators should serve without pay was not adopted, but he exerted influence in such matters as the power of the Senate to ratify treaties and the compromise that was reached concerning abolition of the international slave trade. After the convention, he defended the Constitution in South Carolina. In 1796, however, he accepted the post of Minister to France, but the revolutionary regime there refused to receive him and he was forced to proceed to the Netherlands. The next year, though, he returned to France when he was appointed to a special mission to restore relations with that country. During the ensuing XYZ affair, refusing to pay a bribe suggested by a French agent to facilitate negotiations, he was said to have replied "No! No! Not a sixpence!" When Pinckney arrived back in the United States in 1798, he found the country preparing for war with France. That year, he was appointed as a major general in command of American forces in the South and served in that capacity until 1800, when the threat of war ended. He was twice married first to Sarah Middleton in 1773 and after her death to Mary Stead in 1786. Survived by three daughters, he died in Charleston in 1825 at the age of 79. He was interred there in the cemetery at St. Michael's Episcopal Church.
